Cadiz and Seville, Spain

Today we arrived at the port of Cadiz, Spain. It was a beautiful, sunny day. Once again we had a change of plans. We were booked on a Wonders of Seville tour that went to Alcazar, a Royal palace that was featured in Game of Thrones, but just two days ago, that tour was canceled. So instead we went on an Ultimate Seville and Hidden Treasures tour.

Narrow cobblestone streets and alleys.
Many balconies displayed palm fronds from Holy Week.
This is not gum on the cobblestones. It is wax that dripped from the candles people carried during Holy Week.

Our tour went to the Palace of Las Dueñas, a private monumental residence known for housing one of the largest collections of art in all of Spain. It is the current residence of the Dukes of Alba.

Famous poet, Antonio Machado was born here. Antonio Machado describes this palace in one of his most popular works: Campos de Castilla ‘Fields of Castile’ in 1912: “My childhood is memories of a Seville courtyard, and a clear orchard where the lemon tree ripens…”

The famous lemon tree courtyard

In Nuevas Canciones “New Songs” in 1924, he wrote “It is this light of Seville… It is the palace where I was born, with its murmuring fountain”.

The gardens were amazing! This flower was bigger than my hand!

The stables are one of the most important features in old family homes in Seville. A horse carriage was a sign of wealth and was the only way to move around the city.

Hemingway adored the Spanish way of life and modeled his Key West home after those influences. This, among other things, reminded us of walking through Hemingway’s Key West House.

We continued our tour walking through Seville. So many beautiful sights and wonderful history! Too many amazing pictures that I just had to post a lot of them.

Many streets are lined with orange trees, but the orange are very sour, so they are exported to England for use in making orange marmalade.

Russell made a friend from Puerto Rico. He and his wife are on our cruise.

Next stop on our tour was a flamenco dance museum. It was interesting to see how many different styles of flamenco dance there are. Over 50!

The forms used to make flamenco shoes

We even got our own flamenco dance lesson! Now that was interesting!!!! And of course I video taped it, but only select few will get to see that masterpiece!

This wasn’t the tour we had planned, but it worked out great anyway! Seville is beautiful!
