Today we docked in Alicante, Spain. It is our last stop before we disembark tomorrow.
We traveled about an hour up the mountains to the town of Guadalest and walked around El Castelle de Guadalest.
This dog on a roof greeted us as we arrived in GuadalestMedieval washing bath
This medieval castle was built because there was a lot of fighting amongst the small kingdoms of the area.
The entrance to the town. This is the only entrance/exit to the town. That way they could easily block it off if they were under attack. Wall around the townThis is looking out the exit. There is a room where the window is above for someone to keep watch. It goes all the way to a balcony at the entrance. There are so many around here!
On our drive back to Alicante we saw this huge mountain with a chunk out of it on the left side.
Puig Campana
Legend has it that a giant fell in love with a young woman from a nearby village. They married and lived together in a cabin on the Puig Campana. One day, the giant met a stranger out on the mountainside who told him his wife was seriously ill and would die at sunset that day, as the last rays of the sun disappeared behind the peak. The giant naturally rushed back to the cabin to discover his wife was indeed dying, just as the stranger had said. So the giant took his sword and cut the gap in the summit to delay the moment when the sun finally set, to give his love a few extra moments of life.
The piece of mountain created this tiny island just off the coast. This hotel is modeled after the Puig Campana mountain This was also a unique building with an inverted pyramid at the top with glass all around it. At the entrance to the port was a free museum about the Ocean Race, which used to be called the Whitbread. Of course we had to check it out!A model of the sailboats that race around the worldRussell had always heard about this race, but had no idea it actually started in Alicante. Of course I had to include a picture of the sextant which is how they used to navigate on the waterOne of the Ocean Race boats
We really enjoyed our adventure today! The castle was very interesting, we got to see a lot of the countryside, the weather was perfect and sunny, and the museum was fascinating.
